Reader’s Question:

They say that if you get married, your auto insurance rates will go down. Is this true? My boyfriend and I would like to know more information that could help us lower our car insurance rates here in Oklahoma, Thanks!

Cassie

Tulsa, OK

It is quite possible for your auto insurance rates there in Oklahoma to go down once you get married. More so if you and your spouse or spouse-to-be have excellent driving and credit histories. Car insurance companies generally see married couples as less prone to getting involved in car accidents as compared to singles. This is of course, all based on accumulated statistical data over the years by institutions like the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) However, relying on marriage alone would not really be that reliable to effectively save you a lot of money towards your auto insurance premiums.

If you are looking into ways to save on your insurance rates, here are some tips and suggestions:

1. Increase your deductibles – agreeing to pay for a higher deductible when you file for an insurance claim (but you would do everything possible not to let that happen, right?) will actually make your regular auto insurance premiums lower.
2. Take Defensive Driving Classes – you and your spouse can take state accredited defensive driving classes that will not only make both of you safer drivers on the road, it will also result into added discounts towards your insurance premiums.
3. Consider driving an older vehicle – it costs less to provide insurance to older vehicles, since you can opt to minimize or even drop comprehensive and collision insurance coverage, as compared to expensive, brand new vehicles.

Difference Between Comprehensive And Collision Coverage

Reader’s Question:

What is the difference between collision and comprehensive coverage? Will they have the same auto insurance premiums Oklahoma?

Caroline

East Canadian Oklahoma OK

They will not have the same auto insurance premiums, Caroline, this will never happen – not in East Canadian Oklahoma and not anywhere else. Collision coverage is just a component of comprehensive coverage. You can have collision coverage as a stand-alone, but you can not have comprehensive coverage without collision coverage because it is already built in the policy. Collision pays for the damages to yourself and to your car resulting form a crash, and does not take into account who has initiated the crash. Whether it was you or the other driver, collision coverage will still pay for the expenses. This is usually an add-one to the mandatory liability insurance which is like collision coverage, but only pays for the damages to the offended party and property. Comprehensive insurance includes these two coverage and more. Say your car was stolen while you were shopping around East Canadian Oklahoma. You can not claim reimbursement for this through liability or collision coverage because there was no collision. Only comprehensive coverage can pay for stolen cars and so it is really ideal to have this type of coverage. By logic, comprehensive insurance will always have higher premiums than collision coverage. Can I Take Off Teen Driver From My Car Insurance Policy?

Reader’s Question:

I have a teen driver who has a bad driving record so I need to know if I can keep him off my car insurance policy so I can get the best deal on car insurance.

Orion

Broken Arrow, OK

The cost of car insurance premium rates is undoubtedly high these days. The law requires you to have car insurance if you’re a motorist and these insurance providers know that they have you over a barrel. So you need to do a little research to make sure that you can get the best deal for your car insurance in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. In case you have two or more cars, you can ask for multiple car discounts and put all your cars in just one policy. Also, for the cars that are paid off, you may opt to reduce your insurance coverage on those cars. You are required by law to have comprehensive insurance if you still loan the car but if it is paid off, you can just carry liability coverage.

Regarding your teen driver who has a bad driving record, you can sign a waiver so that you can keep him off your car insurance policy. Most car insurance providers would like to give coverage to all of the drivers in the household but you will be charged less on your premiums if you don’t let your teen drive your car. But of course, you will not be covered if he drives your car and initiates an accident.
