Reader’s Question:

I want to understand why elderly car insurance is expensive and I want to help my grandmother here in Oklahoma keep car insurance expenses down. Thanks!

Ralf

Broken Arrow, OK

It is unfortunate that elderly people have to pay higher for auto insurance. Statistics, however, have shown that senior citizen drivers are very much prone to getting involved in car accidents. With only teenagers ranking higher in deaths and injuries resulting from vehicular collisions. Most auto insurance providers don’t have much of a choice since the physiological effects of aging, deteriorating eyesight, decreased strength and stamina while driving, slower reflexes to avoid accidents and many other factors have caused older people to have no choice but be tagged as “High-Risk” drivers. But that doesn’t mean that you and your grandmother there in Oklahoma would just have to live with it. There are still ways to compensate for high elderly car insurance rates, here are a few tips:

Enroll In Defensive Driving Classes.
Regardless of age, it is always a good idea to take defensive driving lessons as these enhances your skills in driving safely. Accredited courses would also qualify you to get additional discounts towards your auto insurance rates.

Drive an Older Vehicle.
Drive an Older or at least a less expensive car. Switching to an older vehicle will cost your grandmother less in terms of auto insurance premiums and you can even decrease or drop comprehensive and collision damage insurance.

Increase Your Deductibles.
Did you know that the higher your deductibles the lower your auto insurance premiums would become?

Will High Winter Condition Increase My Car Insurance Rate?

Reader’s Question:

I’m afraid that winter conditions here in Oklahoma would cause my car insurance to skyrocket, is there anything I can do to prevent this?

Claire

Midwest City, OK
You’re not alone, a lot of people frown at the prospect of having to pay higher auto insurance rates every winter. Car insurance companies can’t be blamed fully for this, however, as winter conditions makes it very hard to downright dangerous to hit the road for extended periods of time. Heavy snow fall, causing visibility to drop dramatically.  Heavy and dangerous falling tree limbs and other frozen debris are another danger causing extensive damages to your vehicle. Getting stuck in ferocious snow storms and myriads of other events that can cause damage and even vehicular loss. These events dramatically increases your risk of filing an insurance claim, hence the higher insurance rates.

There are definitely ways to compensate for winter insurance rates. The best way would be to perform a pre-winter checkup on your vehicle. Preferably by a mechanic there in Oklahoma that you can trust. Make sure that your engine has the appropriate level of anti-freeze. Also check that your heaters and the vehicles defrosting system is in good working condition. Check transmission and brake fluid. Try to drive on major roads and highways during winter, as these are generally well kept from snow build up. If visibility is poor then take extra precaution and remember not to go beyond the speed limit as it will be very tricky to brake on an icy road. Have towing and emergency numbers handy at all times as well. You want to avoid accidents that would cause your rates to go higher than it already is.

Do You Get Lower Oklahoma Car Insurance If You Get Married?

Reader’s Question:

They say that if you get married, your auto insurance rates will go down. Is this true? My boyfriend and I would like to know more information that could help us lower our car insurance rates here in Oklahoma, Thanks!

Cassie

Tulsa, OK

It is quite possible for your auto insurance rates there in Oklahoma to go down once you get married. More so if you and your spouse or spouse-to-be have excellent driving and credit histories. Car insurance companies generally see married couples as less prone to getting involved in car accidents as compared to singles. This is of course, all based on accumulated statistical data over the years by institutions like the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) However, relying on marriage alone would not really be that reliable to effectively save you a lot of money towards your auto insurance premiums.

If you are looking into ways to save on your insurance rates, here are some tips and suggestions:

1. Increase your deductibles – agreeing to pay for a higher deductible when you file for an insurance claim (but you would do everything possible not to let that happen, right?) will actually make your regular auto insurance premiums lower.
2. Take Defensive Driving Classes – you and your spouse can take state accredited defensive driving classes that will not only make both of you safer drivers on the road, it will also result into added discounts towards your insurance premiums.
3. Consider driving an older vehicle – it costs less to provide insurance to older vehicles, since you can opt to minimize or even drop comprehensive and collision insurance coverage, as compared to expensive, brand new vehicles.

Buying Female Auto Insurance In Oklahoma

Reader’s Question:

I was told that there is an auto insurance exclusively for women which is the female auto insurance. What are the things that I have to consider when buying female auto insurance in Oklahoma?

Hilda

North Cleveland, OK

What you were told was correct, there is an auto insurance especially made for women. They say that women are better drivers than their male counterparts and they obey traffic rules better than men. So when you are buying female auto insurance in North Cleveland, Oklahoma, you have to consider several things. You can have less monthly auto insurance rates if you have high deductibles. You may opt to open a special bank account and consider this as an accident fund. The money that you save on your insurance rates can offset you deductible in case you get involved in a crash. If you have less than perfect driving manners, you should make weekly deposits.

Also, you have to be sure that you carry uninsured and under-insured coverage in your auto insurance policy. You may opt to have “rental car coverage” that is commonly $30 annually and well worth if you got into a car crash and your vehicle is in the shop for a while. You have to inquire about a loss free discount if your driving record is clean. You can also consider having your home and health insurance under one insurance company which is the same as your auto insurance provider. Generally, there would be a discount for having it that way if your insurance company has policies other than for auto insurance.

Will My Oklahoma Car Insurance Increase After DUI

Reader’s Question:

I received a ticket because of a broken taillight and I was also charged with DUI in  Oklahoma. The vehicle I am using is under my mom’s name and also the auto insurance. My question is, will she have higher car insurance because of my DUI?

Carlton

Oklahoma City, OK

Your ticket for the broken taillight won’t probably have an effect on your mom’s auto insurance rates. However, your DUI charge in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma would be taken as a major offense and would possibly have an effect on your mom’s insurance premiums because you’re a rated driver on it. The driving record of any licensed motorist on an auto insurance policy or in a household could have an effect on the insurance rates as well as the insurance provider’s decision to insure the vehicle. Certain offenses could cause an insurance company to turn the policy holder down for coverage or pay high-risk insurance rates.

An individual with a bad driving record would be more of a risk for an insurance provider than an individual with a clean driving record and therefore their premiums are generally higher. A DUI of one driver could have an effect on the whole insurance policy. But if your mom’s premiums become higher because of your DUI, she might want to shop for car insurance to check if she could find a better rate so tell her to get a quote here.

Do I Need DUI Lawyer For Pre-Trial DUI Case?

Reader’s Question:

I just had an arraignment and I already have a schedule for my pre-trial conference. I don’t know if it worked out just fine because I went without a lawyer during my arraignment. Do I need to have a DUI lawyer at a pre-trial to work out a plea deal?

Stella

Tulsa, OK

Technically and legally speaking, you could possibly represent yourself. But quite literally, you would be at the mercy of the court. Remember that the prosecutor would never be on your side. Some judges could be fair, but some of them are extremely harsh to those accused of DUI. This means that the risks are significant and these risks include jail time.

Your DUI lawyer could evaluate your DUI case to make sure there are no legal or police mistakes that should qualify for a dismissal. He/she could nearly negotiate for the minimum penalty allowed under Oklahoma law. He/she can also fight to have lesser criminal and civil charges dismissed, or entered as suspended/concurrent, so they don’t affect you, or further impact your auto insurance rates. The DUI lawyer could also your stress level by walking you through the process every step of the way. That way, you would understand what is happening and you wouldn’t have to worry about being treated unfairly.

Oklahoma DUI Auto insurance Rate

Reader’s Question:

My wife has been charged with DUI here in Oklahoma and part of my concern is, of course, her auto insurance rates. Does that mean that it will go up once she gets convicted? What are the best options that we have now?

Clark

Norman, OK

I have to be honest with you that if your wife will be convicted for her DUI charge in Oklahoma, her insurance company will not give her a big refund. We have to face the fact that insurance companies are private companies and they are here to make money. Reality is they don’t care about you. Insurance companies are there to take your money for years but when you try to make a claim, they will try to avoid paying you.

Unless they decide to cancel you altogether, expect that your insurance company will raise their rates substantially if your wife receives a DUI conviction. It might also be more difficult to obtain automobile insurance after a DUI conviction.

This may sound somewhat odd, but if you can get along without an automobile, then do so. After all, you would save a lot of money. But if you think that this option will not work for you, shopping around would definitely help you in getting the lowest rates possible that you can get. You can start by searching different insurance companies through the internet. They are a lot of advertised insurance companies that offer free no-obligation consultation and price quote.
